Dr. Ira Glick of Stanford University on The Importance of Early Treatment for Schizophrenia

In the past we've covered the research that has shown that its very important for people to get early treatment when they start showing the first possible signs of mental illness, psychosis and schizophrenia. (see here).

Following are a few short videos from an interview with Prof. Ira Glick, M.D., Director of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Chief of the Schizophrenia Clinic at Stanford Medical Center. Dr. Glick talks about the importance of getting treatment as soon as possible when someone is showing signs of schizophrenia. We have a Worldwide list of Early Diagnosis and Treatment centers for psychosis and schizophrenia that you may want to check out for the best possible treatment.

We have a full presentation from Dr. Glick at Stanford's annual education day for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder here.

How can you get early treatment i'm told the first break is almost impossible to stop.I wish these Drs would stop try to put a round pegs into a square hole.

Early treatment is generally described as within a few months of onset of psychosis (ie. the first display of obvious psychosis and delusions, or first "break" with reality). But the sooner that a person gets treatment - the better. One year is better than two years, two years better than three years.

My mother isn't happy with the treatment i've had becuase of how unreasonable it's been at times.

My Dad Hates it

My Brothers Hate the antipsychotics i've been pushed on before and my sister isnt that sure.

Since Comming of drugs and Eating Healthy they have all noticed real improvment far above any improvment Anti-Psychotic medication brings.

You annoy me on two grouds.

1) You arent even looking at alternative ways to treat people batter and give them more options outside of the Clinical hospital model.
Fing Facist(Fashioning things like that and not allowing for a wider liberal way of dealing with less dangerous individuals better).

2) You claim that Comming off Antipsychotics is like entering Insulin coma.
I think you should take the medication you are refering to.
I think you find that the problem most people have with Antipsychotics is Dealing with the change to Life and the reoccurance of problem they had in the first place not the progressivly worst issue you procaim (I have never seen any evedence of progressive deteriation just an on or off medication problem).
How thats anything like a Sugar coma is beyond me.
Note sompeople function worse because they arent as well suited to coping with life outside of support as well as others.

Comming of Benzo groups or other Gabbernergenic Drugs can cause much Anxiety especilly if one has been up high on them.

However the problem with Comming off Antipsychotics is More About not jumping the gun and going and doing things in your life that let you work towards becomming functional.

Bipolar is diffrent because you have lapses of dispare and the Gabbernergenic drugs one often is put on with these often dosent help that well which is why other drugs like Aripirizole are biginning to be used.

However you look at though it's What most patients and familys are looking for is not more drugs its better support.

Familys don't want to know that there loved one is well they want to see them progress in their life and a lot of the time this requires extra support that they don't feel qulified to offer.

Simply treating the problem earlier isn't nessarley what makes the issue better.
If you think about it in a lot of the places where early intervention is better so to is the support usually better.

Lifes not perfect and nor are the solutions to the problems and theirs many people just in the forums here who are crying out for the US system especially to support them or their loved ones better far above feeling the need for medication.

If this doesn't run in your family getting the essential treatment one needs takes some research on the families part.
