Diagnosis of Mental Illness - Anti-Stigma Advertisement in Canada

The British Columbia Schizophrenia Society (Based in Vancouver, Canada) has a number of excellent videos on the web. Below is a good one that is focused on getting people to question their misunderstandings and stigma-oriented assumptions when someone gets a diagnosis of a serious mental illness like schizophrenia. The video ad is a good example of the types of educational ads that we're increasingly seeing in other countries where non-profit public service groups get free air time on the TV. We covered another schizophrenia-related ad out of Australia last year, and also a schizophrenia-focused research advertisement that featured Russell Crowe of "A Beautiful Mind".

From my experience due to publicity in the British media everyone feels sorry for people with manic depression and everyone hates those with schizophrenia. Even though the two are often similar or interrelated.

People understand mood swings so they have empathy for them.
PWS are more suseptable to stigma due to a thought disorder or too much thinking about...anxieties...imagination...What works best is simple mindfulness techniques of meditation or yoga and ofcourse staying on their medication which can be just as traumatic as the positive symptoms themselves.
